Coplin jars (PVC) are laboratory containers used for storing, examining, and staining microscope slides and other specimens. They are often made of polypropylene, a durable, chemically resistant, and inexpensive plastic. Coplin jars can be rectangular or cylindrical in shape, with a tight-fitting lid and multiple wells on the lid for holding specimens or slides.

Coplin Jar PVC

  • The main function is to hold microscope slides vertically during various staining procedures in fields like:

    • Histology: Staining tissue sections (e.g., routine H&E stain, special stains).

    • Pathology: Preparing slides for diagnosis.

    • Microbiology/Hematology: Staining blood smears or bacterial samples.

    • Material: It is usually made from a chemically resistant and durable plastic like Polypropylene (PP) or High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE).

    • Advantages of Plastic: Unlike glass jars, plastic versions are unbreakable and are often suitable for:

      • Microwave applications (for antigen retrieval protocols).

      • Autoclaving (sterilization with heat and pressure).

    • Lid: It comes with a screw cap (often domed or shallow-threaded) that provides a secure seal to prevent contamination and minimize the evaporation of the staining solutions.
