An elbow continuous passive motion (CPM) machine is a physiotherapy device used primarily after surgery or injury to gently and continuously move the elbow joint without effort from the patient.

Elbow CPM Machine

  • Elbow CPM machines are used as an adjunct to traditional physiotherapy to:

    • Prevent Joint Stiffness: The main purpose of the machine is to prevent the formation of scar tissue and joint contractures (stiffness) that can occur after surgery or periods of immobilization.
    • Improve Range of Motion (ROM): By providing controlled, repetitive movement (flexion and extension, and sometimes pronation/supination), it helps maintain and gradually increase the elbow's functional range of motion.
    • Reduce Pain and Swelling: The continuous motion helps pump blood and edema (fluid) away from the joint area, reducing inflammation, swelling, and post-operative pain.
    • Accelerate Healing: Enhanced blood circulation to the affected area promotes the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen, which supports the healing process of articular tissues, ligaments, and tendons.
    • Decrease Complications: Early and controlled mobilization can reduce the risk of complications such as delayed recovery and the need for further procedures to address stiffness.
  • Elbow CPM machines are often prescribed in physiotherapy protocols for patients recovering from specific conditions or procedures, including:

    • Post-surgical rehabilitation: Especially after arthroscopic contracture release surgery.
    • Intra-articular fractures: After open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
    • Prosthetic elbow joint replacement.
    • Release of extra-articular adhesions.
    • Chronic stiffness and arthritis management.
